Some holidays are hard for me and one of them is Mother’s Day. I don’t celebrate it anymore since my mother and grandmother, both of whom raised me, have been gone for many years. My grandmother passed in 1999 and my mother in 2001. It’s been over 20 years but at times it still feels like yesterday.
Both women were phenomenal in my life. My relationship with my mother was tumultuous while I was younger but after I gave my life to Jesus, He began repairing our relationship and in the end, we were the best of friends! I remember us calling each other often saying, “Hey did you see that commercial?”, “Did you watch that episode?” I loved that. After she was gone, I caught myself on more than one occasion calling her number to ask if she had seen something on TV, only to realize she wasn’t there anymore.
I lived with my grandmother (nicknamed “Groggy“) for a year while attending college, but we were always very close. She prayed for me for years and God heard her! I miss them both so much. I had not made a Mother’s Day card this year and wasn’t sure I would but here I am sharing two cards I whipped up last night. It was so easy with Paper Rose’s “Butterfly Garden” cardmaking kit that I used for these cards.
I paired both cards with a beautiful die, “Flourish Medallion” from Anna Griffin Cuttlebug. This was the first die set I bought (2015) when I just beginning to hand make cards. I had no idea what I was doing at the time! I was looking through my stash last night when I saw this die. It is so dainty and beautiful.
Note: I couldn’t find this Cuttlebug die except on Walmart’s website, but it was marked “out of stock” at the time of this post.
So, I die cut it on pale blue cardstock from Cardstock Warehouse for the card above and on one of the pink pattern papers for the card below.
The circle die is from Pinkfresh Studio that I’ve used many times before, however this time, I used the diagonal and the solid frame to make a border. I die cut it a couple of times and stacked them for dimension. Then I stamped the sentiment on top which is from Waffle Flower Crafts “Tulips” stamp set.
I embellished both cards using the pre-die cuts from the pattern paper pack. I love all the butterflies that comes in the kit. The pattern papers on my card panels have some beautiful florals. I trimmed these down to be 4″ x 5-1/2″. This way I could have a nice white border on the left side of the cards.
I don’t think these cards took an hour to make! Still, I think they are just stunning and I know if I could give them to my mom and grandmother, they would love them! This holiday is tough for some like me, but I’m choosing to be grateful for the time I had with them and the lessons they taught me will remain with me forever. AND, because they died in The Lord, I will see them both again and I rejoice over that!
Wishing you a very Happy Mother’s Day!
