Trying out Card Sketches for the First Time

Trying out Card Sketches for the First Time

Hey Crafties, hope you’re having a great day! Today’s cards are another first for me! I’ve seen crafters make cards using card sketch designs and I think it’s great for how to use up pattern papers. Plus that, sometimes I’m design-challenged so having a completed sketch to work from helps my creativity. I’m not always sure what to do with pattern papers.

Well…I was watching a YT video by Charlene of Dream Craft Create where she made a bunch of cards using a card sketch designed by Alicia of “Call Me {Crafty} Al”. The sketch was so cute, it has a fun fold design (landscape card) and the instructions were easy to follow. Alicia designs a new card sketch the first of every month and to participate, all you have to do is follow her YT channel! (no signing up for an email list!). This fun fold card design is for June 2022.

Visit Alicia’s Instagram for more information on her monthly card sketch challenges.

I picked out some of my pattern papers, most I’ve used many times, you can click here to check out my pattern paper category.

I took a bunch of pictures so that I could show you how the cards open. I followed the card sketch religiously with the only difference being the sentiment. I decided not to die cut a strip for that but to use large sentiments and on one card I made a belly band!

For my first card above, I used Paper Rose “Butterfly Garden” pattern papers collection and ephemera and added some 3D pre-made butterflies to the front of the card.

Alicia’s card sketch instructions provides all the details, like the sizes for the pattern papers, white cardstock and the sentiment. I made 3 cards but the sketch yields more if you follow her sketch. It calls for three 12×12 sheets of pattern papers and 5 sheets of 8-1/2 x 11 cardstock to yield 6 cards. I didn’t use 12×12 sheets and it’s great that she also includes instructions if you want to make a smaller number of even just one card.

For my 2nd card, I made a birthday card with Paper Rose “Sunny Days” Pattern papers. The critters in this collection are so cute and fun! I cut a few out, rounded the corners of this one that I used for the inside of the card.

I like that the inside flap is left for a personal message to the recipient.

My 3rd card, I used The Paper Boutique’s “Damask” Pattern papers. And, for the sentiment part, I made a belly band!!!

I love making belly bands for cards, it’s just that extra touch. For this card, the front part of the sentiment was made with Pink Fresh Studio “In the Meadow” washi tape and die cut with a circle die.

The sentiment “Thinking of You” is from a Hero Arts My Monthly Card kit which unfortunately has sold out, sorry about that 🙁

BONUS CARD

I wanted to make 4 cards, but I messed up on this one! Oops 😮 I forgot about the inside of the card to leave open for the personal message. Instead, I added a secondary sentiment and didn’t realize my mistake until I had adhered everything! You’ll see how I rebounded in the last picture below!

I also used more Paper Rose “Sunny Days” pattern papers to design this card, I’m so in love with their papers!

I should have glued that design to the left inside panel of the card. But no worries, the personal message will go on the left, however my error messed up the fun fold opening. This card opens like a normal card instead. Oh well… it’s still cute!

The inside sentiment comes from Honey Bee Stamps “Hello Fall” stamp set.

The main sentiments for all my cards are from Pink Fresh Studio’s Foiled Sentiments Pack. I love this for adding shine and shimmer to cards without breaking out the hot foil machine!

I LOVED making these cards from a card sketch and I’m really excited to get Alicia’s card sketches in the coming months.
