Today, I’m sharing 4 cards that I made with this new tip of using alcohol inks for backgrounds and I learned this from Jennifer McGuire’s YT tutorial here. You really need to watch it if you’re like me and you LOVE playing with alcohol inks!
Her technique makes 2 backgrounds in 1 and I LOVE that because I don’t usually make just one card design, I typically like to make a minimum of 2 using the same design but mixing up the colors.
In a nutshell, you drop some alcohol ink colors with the blending solution onto 1 piece of paper (Yupo paper). I didn’t use a blower, but instead taking a 2nd sheet of paper and pressing it on top of the 1st. I left these 2 sheets pressed together for a few seconds adding a bit of pressure with my hand and then I pulled them apart to reveal the design and oh my goodness!!!! I LOVE how they make a mirror image.
Be sure to watch Jennifer’s video! Below are pics of my finished cards!

When I put the two cards together, look how they mirror each other! So cool!

When I showed these to my hubby, he said it looked like icy mountains! I was like WOW!!! I love the look of these for winter cards!

Now, I used different products to make my cards from several companies! So, I’ve listed them below:
- Alcohol Inks (Tim Holtz) – I picked mainly the blues/greens and purples and pinks for all my backgrounds. I also used Sterling Alloy, white and black inks too!
- The trees are from Hero Arts Tri-fold Edge Winter Pines fancy die set (there’s 3 dies in this set). I trimmed around each tree to have them separately so that I could insert each one where I wanted them.
- The snow bank dies are from Lawn Fawn’s hillside die set (it comes with 3 different size dies for making hills). I die cut a bunch and overlapped them.
- The sentiment is from Hero Arts “My Monthly Hero Kit” from November 2020 (unfortunately the kit sold out!).
- I stamped the sentiments with Simon Says Stamp “Pawsitively Saturated Inks” in Ocean and the pink is Bubble Gum from Pinkfresh Studio.
- The holographic stars are Nuvo Mirrorball Stars Confetti.

I have to say that I had so much fun with this alcohol ink trick that I ended up making 10 backgrounds so I have 2 left over that I plan to use for future cards. I used up all my Yupo paper too so I’ll have to place an order! It was so worth it!
I highly recommend trying this when maybe you need a creative jumpstart or you don’t have an idea in mind. This technique surely should awaken your creativity!!!
